Psalm 30

Psalm 30^[a]

A psalm. A song. For the dedication of the temple.^[b] Of David.

¹I will exalt^(A) you, Lord,
    for you lifted me out of the depths^(B)
    and did not let my enemies gloat over me.^(C)
²Lord my God, I called to you for help,^(D)
    and you healed me.^(E)
³You, Lord, brought me up from the realm of the dead;^(F)
    you spared me from going down to the pit.^(G)

⁴Sing^(H) the praises of the Lord, you his faithful people;^(I)
    praise his holy name.^(J)
⁵For his anger^(K) lasts only a moment,^(L)
    but his favor lasts a lifetime;^(M)
weeping^(N) may stay for the night,
    but rejoicing comes in the morning.^(O)

⁶When I felt secure, I said,
    “I will never be shaken.”^(P)
⁷Lord, when you favored me,
    you made my royal mountain^[c] stand firm;
but when you hid your face,^(Q)
    I was dismayed.

⁸To you, Lord, I called;
    to the Lord I cried for mercy:
⁹“What is gained if I am silenced,
    if I go down to the pit?^(R)
Will the dust praise you?
    Will it proclaim your faithfulness?^(S)
¹⁰Hear,^(T) Lord, and be merciful to me;^(U)
    Lord, be my help.^(V)”

¹¹You turned my wailing^(W) into dancing;^(X)
you removed my sackcloth^(Y) and clothed me with joy,^(Z)
¹²that my heart may sing your praises and not be silent.
Lord my God, I will praise^(AA) you forever.^(AB)

¹⁶“This is why I weep
    and my eyes overflow with tears.^(A)
No one is near to comfort^(B) me,
    no one to restore my spirit.
My children are destitute

¹⁷Zion stretches out her hands,^(D)
    but there is no one to comfort her.
The Lord has decreed for Jacob
    that his neighbors become his foes;^(E)
Jerusalem has become
    an unclean^(F) thing^(G) among them.

¹⁸“The Lord is righteous,^(H)
    yet I rebelled^(I) against his command.
Listen, all you peoples;
    look on my suffering.^(J)
My young men and young women
    have gone into exile.^(K)

¹⁹“I called to my allies^(L)
    but they betrayed me.
My priests and my elders
    perished^(M) in the city
while they searched for food
    to keep themselves alive.

²⁰“See, Lord, how distressed^(N) I am!
    I am in torment^(O) within,
and in my heart I am disturbed,^(P)
    for I have been most rebellious.^(Q)
Outside, the sword bereaves;
    inside, there is only death.^(R)

²¹“People have heard my groaning,^(S)
    but there is no one to comfort me.^(T)
All my enemies have heard of my distress;
    they rejoice^(U) at what you have done.
May you bring the day^(V) you have announced
    so they may become like me.

²²“Let all their wickedness come before you;
    deal with them
as you have dealt with me
    because of all my sins.^(W)
My groans^(X) are many
    and my heart is faint.”

Paul’s Joy Over the Church’s Repentance

²Make room for us in your hearts.^(A) We have wronged no one, we have corrupted no one, we have exploited no one. ³I do not say this to condemn you; I have said before that you have such a place in our hearts^(B) that we would live or die with you. ⁴I have spoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you.^(C) I am greatly encouraged;^(D) in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.^(E)

⁵For when we came into Macedonia,^(F) we had no rest, but we were harassed at every turn^(G)—conflicts on the outside, fears within.^(H) ⁶But God, who comforts the downcast,^(I) comforted us by the coming of Titus,^(J) ⁷and not only by his coming but also by the comfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.

⁸Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter,^(K) I do not regret it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while— ⁹yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. ¹⁰Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation^(L) and leaves no regret, but worldly sorrow brings death. ¹¹See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern,^(M) what readiness to see justice done. At every point you have proved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. ¹²So even though I wrote to you,^(N) it was neither on account of the one who did the wrong^(O) nor on account of the injured party, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us you are. ¹³By all this we are encouraged.

In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus^(P) was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. ¹⁴I had boasted to him about you,^(Q) and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said to you was true, so our boasting about you to Titus^(R) has proved to be true as well. ¹⁵And his affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient,^(S) receiving him with fear and trembling.^(T) ¹⁶I am glad I can have complete confidence in you.^(U)
